What is a Chemical Peel Treatment?
Learning what chemical peeling involves is essential. Chemical peels apply a mixture of exfoliating and nourishing blends to the skin to reveal more youthful and glowing skin. At VIVAA we provide light to medium depth peels on the face or body. With microneedling we can apply these light peels to make them penetrate deeper which in turn makes the peel a medium depth peel.
What Happens When You Get a Chemical Peel?
Just as skin differs from person to person, so do chemical peels. Your provider at VIVAA will create a customized chemical peel treatment and skincare regimen to address your individual skincare concerns so your skincare goals can be achieved.
What Can I Expect Following a Chemical Peel?
Immediately post-peel, your skin will look glowing. Two to four days post treatment you may experience some flaking of the skin, sensitivity, and slight redness as the dead skin cells slough off. The total healing process may take up to seven days.
Why is Chemical Peel Aftercare Important?
All chemical peels remove a portion of the skin's protective barrier, so it is important to protect it from various agents that can damage it. As part of your treatment at VIVAA your provider will go over comprehensive care to maximize the treatment benefits. The following are general guidelines for post-peel care. Your specific instructions may differ depending on your skin type, concerns, or any medical skin issues.
Use Full Spectrum Physical Sunblock
Stay out of direct sun exposure for two weeks post-treatment, as the new skin is particularly vulnerable to damage from ultraviolet rays. After two weeks, be thoughtful about sun exposure, since you do not want to incur additional sun damage. Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least 30 SPF when outside, driving, sitting next to windows or where there is any exposure to UV rays.
Avoid Picking at Your Skin
As cell turnover occurs during peeling, it's tempting to pick at any skin that may be flaking, we strongly encourage you to avoid doing so. Picking at shedding skin can result in bleeding and unintentional scarring. The flaking will pass within a few days.
Avoid Exfoliating Agents
Avoid Retinol or Tretinoin products 2 weeks before and after chemical peel treatments. These products increase cell turnover and can cause worsening of irritation, redness, flaking, and dryness.
Avoid Strenuous Exercise and Excessive Heat
For 3-5 days after chemical peels skip heavy workouts and situations involving excessive heat, like saunas, hot tubs, and tanning beds. Strenuous activities increase blood circulation and can intensify post-peel symptoms and recovery time.
Keep the Skin Hydrated
Chemical peels can cause dryness and flaking, it is important during this time to keep your skin moisturized and hydrated. Your VIVAA provider will recommend soothing and hydrating skincare products to aid with the healing process. Remember to drink eight glasses of water daily to keep your skin hydrated as well.
When to Wear Makeup
When to wear makeup is one of the most common questions we receive. With light peels you can resume wearing makeup about five days after treatments. You don't want your body to absorb containments when the skin barrier is vulnerable. If you have situations where makeup is necessary, follow these suggestions:
- Prep your skin with a moisturizing gel
- Apply sunscreen under makeup
- Use a lightweight foundation
- Instead of foundation, use a tinted moisturizer to limit flaking
- Set your look with a hydrating mist
Remove makeup as soon as possible and wash with a mild cleanser and warm water. Apply an approved overnight cream or moisturizer.
